McCutcheon, Askew Level The Mountain

Alabama State Championship Fall Series
Monster Mountain Motocross Park
November 21, 22 & 23, 2003

The Alabama State Championship Motocross Series began its final go-around this week at Monster Mountain in Tallassee, Alabama. With only four rounds remaining, several class championships remain undecided and racing action was top notch all weekend. There were no surprises in the pro division as series leader Drew Askew came out on top of both the 125 and 250 classes, facing little competition. Equally impressive was Ripley West Virginia's Colby McCutcheon, who led every lap of every moto in both the 125 and 250 C classes. McCutcheon used Honda's latest creation, the CRF250F to totally annihilate his competition in the small class and his trusty CRF450 to do likewise in the 250's.
The Monster Mountain track crew did an outstanding job of track prep and the weatherman cooperated to make this month's a race a success. Mark Straubinger of Banger Race Announcing was on hand to entertain and inform the crowd and riders from nine states came to the mountain to take part.
The first race of the day was the 125C class and McCutcheon took charge immediately. Hot on his heels was Alabama's Jake Meadows on his RM125 and YZ mounted Bobby Ewing. Meadows hung close to McCutcheon nearly all race forcing the Honda rider to protect his lines in every corner. Ewing faded early on and Georgia's Dylan Daniels came up to third. Meadows tried a little too hard and bobbled near race end to turn over second to Daniels. McCutcheon took advantage of Meadow's mishap to pull away and take the win, followed by Daniels, Florida's Loni Porto and Alabama's Jake Meadows. Meadows came back in race two to give McCutcheon fits all race long. The pair went back and forth the entire moto with McCutcheon hanging on to take the moto win followed by Meadows, Kentucky's Lee Campbell and Alabama's Josh Fuller. In the 250C class McCutcheon again took the win in both motos.
The Pro class was a Drew Askew benefit. In the first 125 moto, Askew grabbed the lead and checked out, leaving Tennessee's Phillip Myers and Brent Brush to fight over the scraps. Brush came out in second ahead of Myers. Moto two saw the same scenario. Askew took off leaving Brush and Myers again to finish second and third. The 250 class was a carbon copy of the 125's as Askew ran away again, besting Brush and Myers.
The mini division saw the largest classes and some of the best racing. The 85cc 7-11 group saw Alabama's Kendall Mason and Hunter Mims steal the show. Mims grabbed the lead off the start in both motos but Mason came up from so-so starts to take both moto wins. Tennessee's Alex Ray was third both times out as well. In the 85cc open class, another Mason brother, Blane, was unbeatable as well, topping both races. Brother Kendall went 5-2 to take runner up while Florida's Destyn Patera rounded out the podium. Patera came back to top the 12-13 year group in style via a 1-1 sweep. Mims avenged his defeat in the 85 7-11 class by topping both motos of the Pre-teen class. Alabama's Justin Woodfin finished runner up to Mims in the Pre-teen but had his day in the sun by topping the 65cc 10-11 year group. Indiana's Cory Neely made the trip down south to take the overall win in the 50cc 7-8 class. The mini four stroke classes belonged to Alabama's Joe Love who won both classes.
The Vet Division marked the return of local favorite Andre Pene to the scene. Pene topped the 25+A class and finished a strong second to another local, Darryl Heisler, in the 30+A class. Heisler finished second to Pene in the 25A+ class. Alabama's Bill Matthews topped the 45+ class and finished second in the 40+ class. In the four-stroke class, brothers Jon and Stephen Masters went 1-2 overall ahead of Shane Traylor and Bristol, Tennessee's Chad Viers.

Thomason Tops Alabama Showdown

Alabama State Championship Fall Series
Monster Mountain Motocross Park
October 12, 2003

Round 8 of the Alabama State Championship Fall Series came to Monster Mountain this month and racing action was fast and furious on the Monster's super outdoor course. The championship battle in several classes is tight and the added challenge of riders from outside the area taking away precious points meant no quarter was asked or given in any of the closely contested classes.
Greg Cole's crew had the track groomed to perfection and perfect weather greeted the riders on Sunday morning with temperatures in the fifties. Over 300 riders from 8 states were on hand.
A light turnout of pros in the 125 A/B combined moto did not diminish the racing action at all. When the gate fell in moto one, Alabama's Dash Lyle grabbed the front position immediately with another home state rider, YZ mounted Drew Askew in tow. Honda mounted Mark Smith settled into third behind the fast disappearing pair. As the three moved out front, the gate was reset and YZ mounted T. C. Lightsey nailed the holeshot and began a complete rout of the B class, moving out to an unbelievable lead in the first two laps. Up front in the A class the battle was on. Askew pressured Lyle hard as the two moved away from third place Smith and then made his bid on lap two. Askew jumped past Lyle on the "Stairway to Heaven" but cut in too close in the following turn and got clipped by Lyle, going down instantly. Although he remounted in time to hold on to second, Lyle was gone.
In the meantime, B class leader Lightsey had checked out. Alabama's Adam Rector did his best to keep Lightsey in sight but could not mount an effective challenge. The moto ended with Lyle taking the win in the A class ahead of Askew and Lightsey taking the B class win. The second moto began with Askew grabbing the lead in the A class ahead of Lyle and Lightsey again with a massive holeshot on the second gate. This time Lyle was unable to really challenge Askew despite a great effort and gave the win to the YZ rider. Lightsey meanwhile romped on the B class again, leaving Rector and Louisiana's Shawn Gundersen to fight for runner up. The two battled all moto and the flag fell with Gundersen taking second in the moto as well as second overall ahead of Rector.
The 250A/B combined race saw more riders in both divisions. Florida's Jordan Peeples grabbed the lead at the start ahead of Alabama's Jon Masters and Askew. Lyle lay just out of the leap group. Askew passed Masters early on and went after Peeples. Lyle then came up on Masters as well and made the pass. Soon after, Askew ran into trouble and as the lead group came around Askew's YZ was not to be seen. Lyle moved up, began to put pressure on Peeples and kept after him the entire moto. Peeples held on and took the win ahead of Lyle. Askew made his way back up and passed Masters for third. While the A class raged out front, Lightsey completely devastated the B class, winning by a large margin, again ahead of a charging Adam Rector. Moto two saw CRF mounted James Morrison grab the start ahead of Lyle and Askew. Morrison is a Plus 35 rider and although he looked strong out front the pace proved a little too fast and Lyle, Askew and Peeples soon moved by. Askew pressured Lyle for a while but fell in front of the spectators and lost contact with the lead group. Lyle took the A class win ahead of Peeples while Lightsey again laid waste to the B class.
Great racing action was not limited to the Pro class at Monster Mountain. South Carolina's Jacob Thomason owned the C classes as he led every lap of both the 125 and 250 divisions. Florida's Luke Davie was the master of the mini classes, taking the win in 85cc Open, the 85cc 7-11 year group and finished second to fellow KTM rider Justin Woodfin in the 65cc 10-11 year group. Florida's Lee Spann enjoyed the most success in the Vet ranks, topping both the 25 plus and 30 plus classes aboard his Honda.

Deep in the hear of Dixie was definitely the place to be over the Labor Day weekend, as Monster Mountain in Tallassee, Alabama hosted the inaugural AMA North American Top Kid Motocross Showcase. Nearly 600 entries from twenty states as well as Canada and South America were on hand to take part in a format that allowed every rider to compete against other riders of their own age. The event began with two days open practice followed by a one moto per day schedule that insured plenty of riding time for everybody.
Promoter Gary Blackwell went all out to ensure a great event. In addition to providing a perfectly groomed and watered track daily, Gary had all sorts of nighttime activities for the riders and families. The Monster Mountain concession staff provided a sit down style dinner each night and in addition, there were supercross races for the dads and tag team panty-cross race that proved to be fun for everyone. In addition, a Bingo session on Saturday night saw lots of great prizes awarded including autographed MX gear from some of the nations top racers. Daily door prizes were awarded.
The race format provided classes beginning at 4 years and progressing up to age 15. Both stock and modified classes were included. Each and every moto was hard fought. Nearly full gates in most classes meant that winning would likely be no cakewalk in any division. Several riders scored double class wins and there were some 1-1-1 moto finishes but all had to scrap to get to the finish line first. In the battle for state's bragging rights, Florida topped the rest hands down. Riders from the Sunshine State took 11 class wins out of a possible 51. Alabama took runner up spot with eight wins.
The 50cc divisions provided some of the best racing action all weekend. North Carolina's Michael Young finished the weekend on top in the youngest group with a 3 moto sweep of the 4 year old class. Georgia's Coleman Martin did likewise in the 5 year olds and backed that up with a win in the oil-injected class. Georgia's Laurel Smith topped the girls 50cc class with a sweep also. The 65cc races saw several double class winners. Georgia's Grant Ransdell topped the 9 year old stock and mod classes and North Carolina's Mason Gragg did the same in the 7 year old group. New Jersey's Nik Desiderio came out on top of hard fought battles with Florida's Zack Bell for the 8 year old titles in both the stock and mod groups. The Junior mini win went to Tennessee's Sean Cunningham.
The 85 cc classes began at age 8 and went through 15 years old. A lot of heavy hitters were entered and the racing was hot. Georgia's Taylor Johnson was impressive as he swept the 12 year old stock and mod classes. Johnson's victories were especially sweet as injuries kept him out of Loretta's this year. Florida's Rick Renner was on fire as well, topping both the 13 year old stock and mod classes. Nik Desiderio and Grant Ransdell also won in the 85cc classes, topping the eight and 9 year old stock classes, respectively. New York's Justin Barcia made his trip down south pay off as he aced both the stock and mod 85cc 10 year olds and still had enough energy left for a podium spot in the 65cc mod class.
In the big bike classes (85-125cc), Georgia's Jase Lewis was the man. Lewis topped both 13 year old classes in grand style, sweeping every moto. Georgia's Taylor Johnson took the 12 year old mod class and Florida's Troy Balsters took the stock win. The fifteen year old classes were the sole property of Alabama's Shane "Mudpuddle" Mills. Mills put his YZF out front of each moto, both stock and mod, to make the wins look easy.
Some of the weekend's best rides were seen in the girl's classes. Florida's Jacqueline Ross put on an outstanding display of riding skill, nailing the infield triple every lap and blitzing the whoops with terrific speed each time through. Some of the worlds fastest ladies have been to the mountain and a quick check of Ross' lap times indicate that on this particular day, she would be in the hunt against anybody. Ross topped the 12-15 year group and local favorite Brianna Hinesley edged out North Carolina's Chelsea McSwain in the 7-11 year group.

FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN

Southeastern Amateur Regional

By Steve and Peggy Corlee

Monster Mountain played host this month to its biggest event yet - the Southeastern Regional Loretta Lynn Qualifier. Riders from 19 states were on hand to decide who would attend the prestigious event in August and the racing action was non-stop all day. Torrential rains delayed the start of Saturday's program for several hours but within an hour of the sun's appearance, near noon, the track was in perfect condition. Greg Cole had his Southern Dirt Crew on hand to handle track preparations and Banger's Race Announcing kept the crowd well informed all day.

The popular Pro Sport division was filled with heavy hitters. The signup sheet read like the who's who of amateur racing. Davi Millsaps, Brian Gray, Donnie McGourty, Jim Neese and a host of other top notch talent lined up for what would prove to be some of the best action of the day. In the 125 class, Davi Millsaps was the man. Brian Gray grabbed the start of moto one and held Millsaps off for the win but Millsaps easily won the second and third races. In the 250 class, Gray easily swept all three motos ahead of a hard charging Jim Neese. After a bad first moto, Neese ran a strong second in motos two and three. First moto runner up Jordan Peeples had problems later in the day and was not a threat in the overall outcome.

In the A classes sweeps were the order of the day. Millsaps took all three 125 races, leading every moto from wire to wire. Florida's Donnie McGourty was runner up in each and South Carolina's Danny Smith filled out the podium each time. The 250A class saw Team Green's Bryan Johnson take all three motos in style. Florida's Peeples was runner up in the first two heats but late afternoon problems knocked him out of the running in this class as well. Second went to another Florida Jesse Ballard, via 3-3-2 finishes.

The B division belonged to Team Green's Kyle Chisholm, totally. The Florida youngster led every lap of every moto in the 125 stock and modified as well as both 250 classes. Florida's Shaun Skinner put in great rides also, placing second in three of the four classes. Team Green's Matt Boni took runner up in the 125B stock class.

The C classes belonged to no one rider in particular as inconsistency kept the leader board in question through out the day. Florida's Nick Depalo was by far the strongest rider in the 125 classes winning a total of three motos in two classes but a pileup on the start of the last modified race put him out for the day. South Carolina's Stephen Cooke took the 125 mod win via 5-6-3 finishes. Depalo took the stock win with 4-1-1 finishes. The 250C win went to South Carolina's Casey Shaw. Shaw rode strong all day, losing only one moto to Georgia's Michael Davidson.

There were five different classes in the Vet division and racing was top notch in each. Tennessee's Kevin Walker was the one to watch. Walker gained the lead within the first lap in both the 25 plus and 30 plus races each time out and never looked back. Florida's Vince Devane, a regional star from years ago, came back to racing this year and rode strong all day. Devane finished runner up to Walker in the 30 plus class and rounded out the podium behind Walker and yet another Floridian, Anthony Pocarobba in the 25 plus class. North Carolina's Jim Chester took third in the 25 plus class via 3-5-3 finishes. The 35 plus class win went to Florida's Scott Fredricksen ahead of former GP star Billy Liles. Fredricksen had a bad first moto but came back to win races 2 and 3 convincingly. First moto winner Darryl Heisler suffered in the last moto and could only manage fifth place overall. Heisler came back to top the 40 plus via 2-2-6 finishes and in the process became the only rider to holeshot every moto he raced in all day. Georgia's Ross Johnston won the first two races in the 40 plus class but a pile up in the last moto kept him from the class win. Tim Eggers, another Floridian, rounded out the podium. In the 45 plus class, local ace Johnny Borders took his KTM to a three moto sweep, besting Washington State's Chet Malito. Rounding out the podium was Georgia's Kevin Brule.

The Four-Stroke class saw 43 riders' line up for the first race. Florida's Zack Lundy took the overall win after suffering bad breaks all day long in his B class races. Lundy won the first and last motos in convincing fashion, headed only by Peeples in moto two. Peeples took runner up position and Alabama's Drew Askew rounded out the podium.

LUSK, DAVIE RULE REGIONAL WARM-UP

By Steve and Peggy Corlee

Saturday, May 17, 2003

Riders from nine states came to Monster Mountain this month, each with a plan, hoping to get a slight advantage for the upcoming Southeastern Regional Qualifier for Loretta Lynn's to be held at the Monster in early June. Georgia's Shane Lusk came out on top of both Pro divisions, facing a stellar field in each class. Not to be overshadowed by Lusk's performance in the A class, Florida's Luke Davie went on a rampage himself, topping three different classes in the mini division.

This month's race showcased a number of changes to the track in preparation for the upcoming Regional. Already one of the finest tracks in the country, the Monster has gotten even better thanks to Greg Cole and his Southern Dirt Crew. Cole added four huge spectator tunnel jumps along with several other new features as well. The tunnels will provide complete spectator access to the entire infield, making Monster Mountain the most spectator friendly track around. The changes were well received by the riders and the racing action was top notch all day long.

The 250A/B combined moto was the first moto of the day and was a stagger start. Florida's Jordan Peeples grabbed the holeshot ahead of Alabama's Andre Pene and Lusk. Lusk wasted no time moving into second bringing with him Alabama's Drew Askew. Florida's Jason Baker held down fourth. Peeples and Lusk pulled out a small lead and then engaged in a fierce battle. The two went at it for the entire race, leaving Askew to hold down a lonely third. Try as he might, Lusk was unable to pass Peeples and had to settle for second ahead of Askew, Florida's Jesse Ballard and Baker. While the A class battle raged. Florida's Kyle Chisholm took his KX to a wire to wire runaway in the B class, ahead of Florida's Eric Stewart and South Carolina's Craig Childs.

Moto two action was great. The race started with another Peeples holeshot but Askew had plans for this race and got by Peeples immediately. Lusk held down third with North Carolina's Paul Justus in fourth. While Askew tried to break away, Peeples and Lusk got into a great paint swapping duel that lasted nearly all the race, until Peeples went down shortly after Lusk got by on the uphill triple. Free from Peeples, Lusk started to gain on Askew and was able to make the pass for the win in the last corner section. Lusk's 2-1 finish gave him the overall ahead of Askew and Peeples. Ballard and Justus rounded out the top five. Chisholm again led the B class wire to wire.

The 125A/B action was more of the same as Lusk won both races handily. Moto one saw Baker grab the start ahead of Florida's Johnny Logan, Lusk and Askew. Askew moved into second on the first lap while Lusk moved Baker back to third. Lusk made the race complete as he dropped Askew from the lead on lap three and race one ended with Lusk, Askew and Baker on the podium. Fellow North Carolinian's Doug Earl and Paul Justus rounded out the top five. Chisholm again ran away with the B class.

Moto two saw Baker grab the lead and then drop to third as Askew first led and then Lusk. Lusk was out front at the checkers and took the overall win followed by Askew, Baker, Earls and Justus. Chisholm took the moto two win in the B class ahead of a hard charging Jase Lewis, who is making the transition to the big bikes this year. Lewis tried hard but was unable to reel Chisholm in. Chisholm took the overall win ahead of Lewis and Alabama's Shane Mills.

Action in the mini classes was hot and heavy all day. The most success in the small bores belonged to Florida's Luke Davie. Davie took the 65 10-11 year win aboard his KTM and then broke out his RM85 to take top honors in the Pre-teen and the 85 7-11 year. Local hot shoe Chase Borders aced the Senior Mini and Super Mini classes in grand style. Chisholm and Lewis met again in the Schoolboy class and while Lewis tried his hardest to take the win, he just was not able to match the pace set by Team Green's Chisholm.
